    Many of us Australians are in Hong Kong for work and earning more than we would back home. Couple that with forgivingly low income tax and we find that money can start to accumulate in our bank accounts. Hong Kong is a tax haven for investing. There is no tax on investment gains and income. That’s far from the case in Australia. If you return home with significant assets and wealth that you have accumulated while you are overseas, the Australian taxation system will take its pound of flesh on your gains.

    There are ways that you can prepare for this and maintain the tax free status that you currently enjoy in Hong Kong. In fact, the Gillard government, in an effort to encourage Australian talent back onshore, passed an investment tax ruling allowing those returning home to structure their assets in a way that is very tax efficient.   

    Bart Piestrzysnki, a fellow Australian, will discuss options on how to implement these tax rulings to your advantage. He will also outline the most recent superannuation changes and how these might affect returning expatriates.
